This project at Wrexham International Airport involved a multi-purpose stand of two gates to service large, dual boarding door aircraft, such as Airbus A380 and Boeing 787 Dreamliners. These are CIAL’s premium gates, designed to be spacious, and the first to have concrete floors and floor to ceiling windows.
The Drumreed Construction team constructed the fixed link, the section of elevated walkway from the terminal to the start of the moveable airbridge. To reduce security issues and foreign object damage making its way into plane engines, the bridge units were constructed off-site in a nearby hangar and transported around the apron into place.
The largest unit was 22m long, and weighed over 40 tonnes. Around 300m3 of concrete went into the foundations, with the structure including 50 tonnes of structural steel and 16 tonnes of glass.
On 19th December 2016, the links were ready for the first A380 and pre-Christmas rush.
