Linac 3 Refurbishment, Dunedin Public Hospital

This project involved the refurbishment of areas within the existing Linac 3 Bunker/Maze and Control Room in the Oncology Building at Dunedin Public Hospital. The department provides specialist inpatient and outpatient services to the Otago/Southland community; it is a highly-serviced environment delivering critical services within the wider hospital campus.

Challenges

Dunedin Public Hospital is a 7-day-a-week, 24- hour a-day, operational ‘campus’ environment.

The Drumreed Team was responsible for ensuring the continued supply of critical services to the site, as well as enabling safe, unimpeded access for staff, visitors, vehicles and service deliveries. This included the delivery of concrete in a highly sensitive environment.

The team successfully poured a new concrete sheer wall and floor, along with additional structural steel to support the new Linear Accelerator.

These challenges were exacerbated by the location of the Linac 3 project - deep within the hospital campus and adjacent to crticial services.

This required careful planning to ensure the security of the site and the safety of all people accessing the area.

Early and frequent communication, planning and scheduling, and a great degree of flexibility was required to ensure the project did not impact or disrupt the delivery of critical services. Wherever possible, the Drumreed team undertook work that caused significant noise and vibrations in the early morning, late evening or at weekends when there would be less impact on the wider hospital campus.
