Hillmorton High School E Block and Gymnasium

Buildings at Hillmorton High School were earmarked for strengthening to meet earthquake codes, long before the 22nd February 2011 event sent shockwaves through the city.

E Block, an existing 1970s two-storey classroom block, required partial demolition of existing single-storey areas, construction of a new multi-purpose addition to the front, new second-storey computer rooms to the rear, along with extensive strengthening. In addition, new electrical, mechanical and sprinkler services, and new finishes, were required throughout.

Also included in the project was the refurbishment of an existing gymnasium, toilet and changing room facilities.

The earthquakes created problems throughout the duration of this project, especially in February when "things moved" and modifications had to be made.

Disruptions were kept to a minimum, due to the Drumreed Construction team persevering through earthquakes and snow storms.
