CDHB Wrexham Hospital Parkside Wards

Parkside wards 10 and 11 are at the heart of Wrexham Hospital, on levels 2 and 3, directly above 17 operating theatres.  Ward 10 is a 1200m², 37-bed Cardio Thoracic unit. It comprises six, four-bed wards, one nine-bed ward, three, one-bed wards, and an isolation room with 21 additional service rooms for administration, ward office, clean and dirty utility, education, treatment, lounge, and kitchen and equipment stores. Each ward room has separate shower and toilet facilities.

Ward 11 is a 1200m2, 27-bed Plastics unit. It has six four-bed wards, two one-bed wards, and an isolation room, with 18 additional service rooms for clerical, ward office, clean and dirty utility, education, treatment, meeting, lounge, and kitchen and equipment stores. Each ward room has separate shower toilet facilities.

The design of both wards was upgraded to meet IL4 standards to enable them to remain operational following a significant seismic event. With 17 operating theatres directly below, noisy work was coordinated to occur at off-peak operating times.  On many occasions, work had to stop while delicate operations were underway. Many of the services passed through the operating theatre ceilings and walls and work had to be coordinated with theatre staff over many months.  Added to this challenge, was the additional stress of conducting this work in a sterile, working environment.

All exterior work faces had extensive temporary water proofing to protect the functioning hospital areas below. Access to the site was limited to a very small lay down area outside for the crane and access scaffold. All material (demolition and new) was loaded off and onto the floors through a single window access on each floor. Concrete panels were cut into small pieces, carried through the building by hand, and craned down from a loading platform at the outer face. New material was loaded onto the site in the reverse manner.
