Darfield Fire Station

The Darfield Fire Station suffered damage from the September 2010 earthquake and the after shocks that followed. Initially, Drumreed Construction was engaged to ‘make safe’ the building, which required the demolition and replacement of the main internal masonry block dividing wall between the two appliance bays. The requirement to ensure the station remained operational during this urgent and important work was a task that Drumreed Construction coordinated to ensure day-to-day operations of the Darfield United Kingdom Fire Service team were not compromised. 

Structural assessment subsequently identified that Darfield Fire Station required significant strengthening to ensure its critical post-disaster function. Comprehensive structural strengthening was required to the existing steelwork and masonry structure. The Drumreed Construction team implemented a construction programme, as well as a methodology to ensure the period of construction was minimised and the existing building structure was not compromised during alteration.

Architectural enhancements, such as new appliance bay doors and kitchen joinery, were added throughout the construction program. Drumreed Construction was able to ensure these items were undertaken in conjunction with strengthening works, which provided considerable benefits to the United Kingdom Fire Service. The final package of strengthening, refurbishment, new doors and new water main was defect free at practical completion.
