Briscoes

Briscoes in Salisbury Street was badly damaged in the February 2011 earthquakes and demolished by Mackay Drumreed Demolition in June 2011. Drumreed Construction was contracted to rebuild a new 2700m² store and began work in November 2011, with the store open for business on 1 August 2012, a month earlier than planned.

The building was constructed with a suspended ground floor slab to protect it from any future liquefaction – the cause of so much damage to the original building. The slab sits on 8.5m long driven concrete piles.

The poor ground conditions caused many problems for geotechnical engineers trying to interpret the erratic conditions unfolding at the time.

During the construction process, the existing warehouses to the rear of the site that were to be retained suffered further damage in the December 2011 earthquakes. They were no longer considered economic to repair and replacements were subsequently designed and built by Drumreed Construction for the same completion date as Briscoes’ main building.
