The Hub, Hornby

Work began in March 2013 on the first stage of the extension to Hornby Mall. Part of a three-stage project, the initial work included an 8,000m², 2 level structure for one main anchor tenant, The Famers Department Store, as well as six other specialty shops. The second stage, which commenced in September 2014, involves further retail shops and a car park. The final stage of this project involved refurbishment of existing facilities.

As Hornby Mall remained fully operational throughout this project, care and attention was paid to ensure the day-today operations of the mall was not affected by construction works. This was initially managed by the majority of the demolition works being undertaken outside trading hours.

Drumreed demonstrated an ability to work well within a restricted site (bordering a state highway and mall loading dock) and cope with the demands of a fast-track procurement process, within a tight construction timeframe.

With its distinctive cladding, the new building is an impressive product of Calderone’s hard work.

Challenges
  • Very restricted site bordering operational shopping mall
  • Noise and vibration to be minimised during mall operating hours
  • Construction of 300,000 litre water tank below carpark ramp
