Kaiapoi New World

Drumreed was more than halfway through a $6 million upgrade of the Kaiapoi New World supermarket when the premises were destroyed by the 4th September 2010 earthquake.

A successful tender saw Drumreed Construction subsequently appointed to carry out the contract for a new $12 million replacement supermarket and, undaunted by previous seismic events, a team began work on the project early in 2011, with the first job being to undertake substantial ground remediation.

The new supermarket is 2860m², with 83 car parks.  The store features an espresso coffee counter, a larger than usual wine and beer area, a bigger, more customer friendly butchery, a larger fish and seafood area, and a bigger deli and cheese stand.  There are 14 checkout lanes, including six self-scan lanes.

The doors to the new state-of-the-art supermarket opened before Christmas 2011.

“Drumreed were just amazing when we were carrying out the extensions to the original premises before the earthquake. They went out of their way to ensure that our customers were not unduly inconvenienced at that time. They were just as devastated as we were by the damage caused by the earthquake.”
- Andrew Palmer, Owner/Operator of Kaiapoi New World.
